Why Scheming

Freedom is one of the major ideals of human existence.  We usually think of freedom as an external reality, with a political and economic framework, related to laws and government and material well being.   Freedom is also an ideal that applies to the internal realm, central to the notion of psychological health.

Internal, psychological freedom is best understood from a consideration of human awareness or consciousness.  The broader our range of awareness, the more freedom we have to see possibilities, to create meaning and to make choices.

Psychotherapy is most importantly about the expansion of awareness.  The therapist uses his or her focused attention and present awareness to support the development of greater consciousness in the client.  In the process, various kinds of impediments to awareness are encountered.  The therapist supports the client’s efforts to remove these barriers.

The Therapist’s consciousness is helped by various internal schemas that he or she has learned or developed which guide the work of identifying and overcoming the client’s internal obstacles to expanding awareness, choice, and freedom.

On this blog site I will be posting a number of schemas that I find useful in my work as a psychotherapist.  I welcome comments, criticisms, suggestions, praise, other schemas.
